On 1 November 2014, at around 9am, over a hundred volunteers gathered at Bakau LRT Station in Sengkang to take part in the 2014 SIM-UOL Transformers first fundraising event, Rag and Bone 1. The objective for the day was to go to the different houses, collecting newspapers and unwanted clothes to help raise funds to upgrade the homes of the needy during the main Transformers event in December.
In total, the entire group of volunteers went to 170 blocks of flats in Sengkang. Working in groups of 6 to 8, the volunteers collected the donated newspapers and unwanted clothings from the residents in the area. A majority of the residents were very welcoming and generous in doing their part for the needy. Many groups completed their designated blocks in record time with satisfying result. A few groups even engaged in "friendly competitions" with a few ‘Karang Guni’ uncles.
At the end of the event, everyone was physically and emotionally exhausted from the collection. However, thinking of the beneficiaries of their efforts as well as the friendships forged during the event made the day a meaningful one.
SIM-UOL Transformers was set up to organise a series of community outreach programmes for students to participate in. This year, they have decided to refurbish the houses of the elderly and less fortunate families, cleaning, repainting and providing new furniture to improve their living environment while taking elderly for a tour. The efforts of the participants during this event helped secure significant amount of funds towards the purchasing of essential goods which would positively impact the living condition of these families.
Due to the success of Rag and Bone 1, a second event, Rag and Bone 2, was organised. It was held on Saturday, 9 November 2014 in Jurong West.
Do volunteer for this year’s Transformer main event: “FURNISHING DREAMS, ONE HOME AT A TIME”, which will be held on 13 December 2014.
You can either volunteer for a) Refurbishment or b) Elderly group tour.
