Japanese cuisine has always been a popular choice among Singaporeans. The demand is so overwhelming that it led to a wide selection of Japanese restaurants being set up here. We are spoiled for choices, literally. Our basis for selection is affordability and quality – to ensure that your meal is worth every penny you paid for.
Searching high and low, we found our match – Shinkei Japanese Restaurant. Shinkei is a Japanese a-la-carte buffet restaurant where food is served right to your table. Starting from $32.90, prepare to gouge yourself full on a vast array of dishes (finger-pressed sushi, sashimi, grilled on-sticks, tempuras, ramen and many more). What we like most about this place: no need to compete with other tables for coveted food items and the freshness of the food as they are prepared upon order. Itadakimasu!
We say, eat this once its served! The crispiness of the seaweed combine with the rice and flavorful ingredients simply taste heavenly! We recommend the soft shell crab Temaki. It’s a little different from the ones outside as this is served with black pepper sauce that adds a unique touch to the traditional soft shell crab Temaki.
Shinkei offers a fanciful range of sashimi, with up to six different kinds on the menu. We tried the sashimi platter, and placed additional orders immediately upon tasting its freshness and the richness in its flavour. The thick slices of raw goodness were simply irresistible and bound to please the most demanding of tastebuds. Our suggestion: take a sip of water before sampling each type of sashimi to experience the full taste of the dish.
Serving a variety of finger-pressed sushi, we opted for a more unique choice – Special Matt Sushi Roll, topped with mango and tobiko (flying fish roe). The sticky-sweet mango was the perfect complement to the rice, cucumber and seaweed. Not forgetting the tobiko, each painstakingly selected ingredient contributes to the greatness of the dish.
Deep Fried Dishes
The tempura (battered and deep friend) shrimp is a must-try at Shinkei restaurant. Right out from the pan, the shrimps are crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. Paired with the dipping sauce, it forms a divine combination that will tempt your taste buds.
Takoyaki dough balls are commonplace in most Japanese restaurants and road-side stalls. Typically topped with takoyaki sauce, mayonnaise and dried fish flakes, the dish is adored by many, young and old. What sets Shinkei’s apart from the rest is that the takoyaki balls are relatively smaller, bite-sized actually. It makes it easier to devour one ball at a time, enabling you to taste the heavenly mix in one go.
Grilled upon order, every stick is served hot. With a vast variety to choose from, one can surely find some that is to your fancy. Challenge your friends to see who has the most sticks at the end of the meal.
The teriyaki grilled chicken is a must-try if you are here. The sweet taste from the tender soft chicken coated with a layer of teriyaki sauce leaves you wanting for more. We can never have enough of this dish!
The cold noodles may not be the best you find in town, but the refreshing treat of tangy, chilled noodles after several servings of intense dishes more than make up for its lackluster appearance. Pick up a small amount of noodles using chopsticks and swirl it in tsuyu sauce before delivering it to your mouth. We offer a tip: add a dollop of wasabi to the dipping sauce to create a fresh new flavour.
