Food Review: Jinjja Chicken

It has been a few years since the hallyu wave hit the shores of Singapore, but the Kraze is still going strong. Whether it is K-pop, Korean Dramas, or Korean Food, we love our Korean culture.

Located at Bugis Village, JINJJA Chicken is one of the many Korean restaurants that have popped up on our shores. You can expect to be served unique and authentic Korean meals here at this Korean fast food casual eatery. Apart from the popular Korean fried chicken, there is also a variety of noodle, rice, and side dishes available to ensure that you will be spoilt for choices. Best of all, JINJJA Chicken is Halal Certified!

Jinjja Wings

Available Flavours: Soy Garlic/ Yangnyeom/ Monster/ Mix

Just as it says, when in Rome, do as the Romans do, so when at a Korean Chicken Restaurant, one must eat the Korean Chicken.

We decided on the two extremes – Soy Garlic, for the spice-noob, and Monster, for those of you who want to put your spice tolerance to the test. In my opinion, the best thing about Korean Fried Chicken is the fact that it still remains crispy despite being coated with sweet and sticky sauce, and Jinjja Wings were no exception. While the Monster Jinjja Wings were sweet on the first bite, but do not be fooled, cause the spiciness will set in soon after.

Jjamjja Myeon (2-in-1)

Jjampong & Jjajang Myeon

Can’t decide between Jjampong (Spicy Seafood Noodle Soup) and Jjajang Myeon (Korean Black Bean Noodle)? At Jinjja Chicken you can have the best of both world with their 2-in-1 Jjamjja Myeon!

The myeon (noodles) were soft and chewy, which paired well with their individual soup and paste. Their Jjampong was served with their flavourful spicy broth, topped with a generous portion of cuttlefish and squid. Usually including pork, Jinjja Chicken’s Jjajang Myeon took a vegetarian twist, while still retaining the dish’s authentic flavour. My only complain would be that I wished there was more chunjang (black bean paste), but that’s cause I am a sauce kind of girl.

Chicken Burger

Having a dilemma on whether to have a Western or Asian meal? We would suggest getting the Chicken Burger, where east meets west.

The thick piece of chicken cutlet was well coated with the finger-licking soy garlic sauce. Just like the Jinjja Wings, the skin of the chicken remained crispy despite the glaze on the meat and the burger’s sauce. The ratio of the bread and the chicken was just nice, without either masking the taste of the other.

Tofu Bibimsalad

For those who want to watch their diet, but can’t say no to food, Jinjja Chicken had got your back with their Tofu Bibimsalad. You can expect a great mix of texture, with the soft tofu, chewy japchae (Korean Glass Noodle), on top of a bed of crisp lettuce. The flavour of the various elements, from the sweet cherry tomatoes to the tinge of sourness from the vinaigrette, tied together nicely, without being too overwhelming. Overall, the Tofu Bibimsalad was a refreshing twist on our palette.

Seafood Mandu (Fried)

While you can choose the healthier choice and go with the steamed Mandu (dumplings), we opted for their fried option. Their dumplings have a thin and crispy skin, filled with a generous amount of filling. Sink your teeth into it and you will see it’s stuffed with the filling that includes whole prawns and chives. To top the whole dish off, it comes with a soy-sesame dip, which definitely completes the overall flavour. In my opinion, Mandu here is definitely value for money.

Sesame Seaweed Fries

When there’s chicken, there needs to be fries, or it wouldn’t be a complete meal. Jinjja Chicken has a variety of fries, namely sea salt, sesame seaweed and tteokbokki. We decided to go for an all-time classic – the seaweed fries. Do not belittle this dish. It was the first item we received, and once we started munching on it, we found ourselves unable to stop; almost finishing it before the rest of our food came. If you are looking for something different in your fries, but at the same time nothing too overpowering in flavour, we would definitely recommend the sesame seaweed option.

Available Flavours: Patbingsu/ Oreo/ Strawberry Cheesecake/ Pepero (NEW!)

No matter how full we were from all the food, we still had space for dessert. Of course, at a Korean Restaurant you have to have Bingsu!

The patbingsu is a classic; shaved ice topped with injeolmi (rice cake) and azuki red beans. If you’re not one with the sweet tooth, or want a taste of Korea, this is the flavour for you. For those of you who love anything cookies & cream, I believe their oreo bingsu is right down your (taste) alley. I am usually not a fan of anything strawberry, but their strawberry cheesecake bingsu made me second-guess myself. The mix of the caramelised biscuit crumb, cheesecake, strawberry jam, all on top shaved ice, was a match made in heaven. We also tried the newest addition to the bingsu family – Pepero Bingsu, which was launched in celebration of 11.11 (Pepero Day in Korea). For all those with a sweet tooth, this might just be the bingsu for you, topped with mini-marshmallows, white cookie pepero, and choco pie!

Looking at their menu, Jinjja Chicken has kept all their dishes affordable, with everything under $10. This is definitely a plus point for us university students. This way, you are unable to go back for more great Korean food without burning too big of a hole in your wallet.
